PB4L

(Positive Behaviour for Learning)

PB4L is a framework designed to support schools in developing a positive and inclusive learning culture. Based on evidence that explicitly teaching and reinforcing expected behaviours creates a more engaged and productive school environment, at Renwick School we use PB4L to build a climate where students feel safe, supported, and motivated to learn.

Our Values and PB4L

PB4L aligns perfectly with our three core values:

  • Be Respectful – Show with our actions and words that we care about people, places, and things.
  • Be Resilient – Give everything a go, even when it challenges us — see it, face it, positively push through.
  • Be Resourceful – Build and use our kete of skills to navigate the world around us.

How PB4L Works at Renwick School

Explicit Teaching of Behaviour Expectations Our school defines clear expectations for student behaviour in our Renwick Behaviour Curriculum and explicitly teaches them, just as we would academic subjects.

Positive Reinforcement Students are recognised and rewarded for demonstrating expected behaviours, reinforcing their understanding and motivation. This happens in class groups, whānau groups, and house groups, as well as through our whole-school token system.

Consistent Responses to Behaviour Staff use consistent, restorative strategies to manage behaviour, ensuring fairness and clarity. Our Behaviour Traffic Light — set out as an easy-to-follow flowchart — helps guide both students and staff.

Data-Driven Decision Making We collect and analyse behavioural data to inform targeted interventions and improvements.

By embedding PB4L into everyday school life, Renwick School creates an environment where students feel empowered to take ownership of their learning and interactions. It reinforces the idea that behaviour is learned — just like academic skills — and provides a framework for fostering a respectful, resilient, and resourceful community.

Te Whare Manaaki

Strengthening Wellbeing and Learning

A Safe Space for Every Student

Te Whare Manaaki is a dedicated space where students can feel seen, heard, and supported. Whether a student is navigating a tricky friendship, feeling overwhelmed, or simply needing a moment to reset, our team is here to help. We believe that when students feel safe and connected, they are better equipped to engage with their learning and thrive.

Working Together with Whānau

We know that supporting a child’s wellbeing is a shared responsibility between school and home. Te Whare Manaaki works in close partnership with whānau to ensure students receive consistent, wraparound support. We welcome open conversations and encourage families to reach out whenever they have questions or concerns about their child’s well-being.

Connecting to the Right Support

Sometimes students need more specialised support than a school can provide on its own. Te Whare Manaaki helps connect students and their whānau with the right external agencies and services, ensuring no one falls through the cracks. We work alongside community organisations and health professionals to provide pathways to the support that best fits each student’s needs.
